Investing in Indian funds as an NRI

Non-Resident Indians can invest in Indian mutual funds, and many do so to stay connected with growth back home. A few rules are different from those for resident investors.

Accounts and payments

Investments must come from your own NRE or NRO bank account. Redemption proceeds are credited back to the same type of account. Repatriability depends on the account used.

KYC and declarations

You need KYC with an overseas address, a copy of your passport and PAN, and FATCA/CRS declarations. If your residential status changes, update it with the AMC and your KYC registration agency.

US and Canada residents

Because of reporting requirements in those countries, several AMCs either do not accept investments from US and Canada residents or accept them only with additional declarations or physical presence in India. The list changes, so confirm before you invest.

Tax

TDS is deducted at the time of redemption on capital gains. Depending on your country of residence, a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement may apply. Please consult a tax professional in both countries.

We serve investors nationwide and worldwide. See our NRI services.

Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully. This article is for general information and investor education only and is not investment advice.
